A Day in the Life: Cornell Admission Rep. Jasmine Washington

Washington holds up a coffee cupCornell College Admission Representative Jasmine Washington definitely gets her steps in each day.

You can find her walking to the SAW (The Small Athletic and Wellness Center), the Welcome Center in the Thomas Commons, and Luce House throughout her day for her various activities and meetings, including meetings with prospective students.

“I really look forward to student meetings,” Washington said. “It’s just an exciting time for students to visit campus and start their college search. It’s a big step for them and can be very intimidating. I try to keep meetings low-key and casual, so I can really get to know them as a person.”

Washington, a former track and field athlete, specializes in helping coaches with their recruiting needs. She spends her days meeting with coaches, collaborating with her admission teammates, and reading applications.

During the evening hours, Washington calls a couple of students to check in on their college search and to see if they have any questions about Cornell, the block plan, or student life. She spends time helping them with their application process and understanding the requirements. She says it’s also an opportunity to catch up with them about their big basketball game or wrestling match that day or even what shows they’re watching on Netflix.

Washington has lots of advice for students, but if someone is having a hard time picking a college to attend or visit, she tells them to list the top three things they want in a college and cross colleges off their list that don’t meet those criteria.

Washington enjoys it when students email or call her with questions and says one of her favorite questions to answer is what makes Cornell special.

Washington writes a note to a student in the Welcome Center.“Cornell is diverse in a way that everybody comes from different backgrounds and brings their own sense of flair to campus,” Washington said. “It’s something you may not find at other college campuses. We have students from Chicago, Dallas, and some really big cities. We also have students who have grown up in small towns, plus everything in between. I think that makes Cornell unique.”
